Maurice Griffin was adopted when he was 32 years old. He had lived with Lisa and Charles Godbold 20 years earlier as a foster child. Although Maurice was now a man living on his own, adoption had been what the family and he had always longed for. once they were reunited and the adoption was official, Maurice commented, “This is probably the happiest moment in my life.... I’m happy to be home.”
Those of us who have joined the family of God may refer to that time as the happiest moment in our lives. When we trust Christ for salvation, we become God’s children, and He becomes our heavenly Father. The Bible assures us, “You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus”(Gal.3:26).
As God’s adopted children, we acquire spiritual siblings—our brothers and sisters in Christ—and we all share an eternal inheritance (Col.1:12). In addition, Jesus’ Spirit indwells our hearts and enables us to pray using the name Abba, Father(Gal.4:6)—like a child calling, “Daddy.”
To be a child of God is to experience the closeness and security of a Father who loves us, accepts us, and wants to know us. Our adoption into His family is a wonderful homecoming. |

Galatians 3:26–4:7
[26] For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
[27] For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
[28] There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
[29] And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
[4:1] Now I say that the heir, as long as he is a child, does not differ at all from a slave, though he is master of all,
[2] but is under guardians and stewards until the time appointed by the father.
[3] Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world.
[4] But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
[5] to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
[6] And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!"
[7] Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. | |

모리스 그리핀은 32세에 입양되었습니다. 입양되기 20년 전에 그는 리사와 찰스 갓볼드의 가정에 위탁아동으로 들어가 그들과 함께 살았습니다. 이제는 모리스가 독립해서 따로 살고 있지만, 입양은 그 가족과 그가 늘 원해왔던 일이었습니다. 공식적으로 입양되어 그들이 가족으로 재결합했을 때, 모리스는 “아마도 지금이 내 인생에서 가장 행복한 순간일 겁니다. … 나는 가족과 함께 있어 행복합니다.”라고 말했습니다.
하나님의 가족이 된 우리는 그때가 인생에서 가장 행복했던 순간이라고 말할 것입니다. 구원의 그리스도를 신뢰할 때, 우리는 하나님의 자녀가 되고 하나님은 우리의 하늘에 계신 아버지가 되십니다. 성경은 “너희가 다 믿음으로 말미암아 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나님의 아들이 되었으니”(갈 3:26)라고 확증해줍니다.
하나님의 양자로서, 우리는 그리스도 안에서 영적 형제자매들을 얻게 되고 영원한 기업도 함께 받게 됩니다(골 1:12). 그뿐 아니라 예수님의 영이 우리 마음에 거하시고 마치 어린아이가 “아빠”라고 부르듯이 아바, 아버지라는 이름을 써서 기도할 수 있게 됩니다(갈 4:6).
하나님의 자녀가 되는 것은 우리를 사랑하시고, 받아주시고, 우리를 알기 원하시는 하나님 아버지의 친밀함과 보호를 체험하는 것입니다. 하나님의 가족으로 입양되는 것은 멋진 귀향입니다. |
갈라디아서 3:26–4:7
[26] 너희가 다 믿음으로 말미암아 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나님의 아들이 되었으니
[27] 누구든지 그리스도와 합하기 위하여 침례를 받은 자는 그리스도로 옷 입었느니라
[28] 너희는 유대인이나 헬라인이나 종이나 자유인이나 남자나 여자나 다 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나이니라
[29] 너희가 그리스도의 것이면 곧 아브라함의 자손이요 약속대로 유업을 이을 자니라
[4:1] 내가 또 말하노니 유업을 이을 자가 모든 것의 주인이나 어렸을 동안에는 종과 다름이 없어서
[2] 그 아버지가 정한 때까지 후견인과 청지기 아래에 있나니
[3] 이와 같이 우리도 어렸을 때에 이 세상의 초등학문 아래에 있어서 종 노릇 하였더니
[4] 때가 차매 하나님이 그 아들을 보내사 여자에게서 나게 하시고 율법 아래에 나게 하신 것은
[5] 율법 아래에 있는 자들을 속량하시고 우리로 아들의 명분을 얻게 하려 하심이라
[6] 너희가 아들이므로 하나님이 그 아들의 영을 우리 마음 가운데 보내사 아빠 아버지라 부르게 하셨느니라
[7] 그러므로 네가 이 후로는 종이 아니요 아들이니 아들이면 하나님으로 말미암아 유업을 받을 자니라 | |
