| Whose Will? |

| “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” — Matthew 26:39 |
May all things happen according to your will,”is a greeting frequently exchanged during Chinese New Year. As wonderful as that may sound, events turn out best when God’s will plays out and not mine.
Given a choice, Joseph would not have wished to be a slave in Egypt (Gen. 39:1). But despite his captivity, he was “successful”because “the Lord was with [him]”(v.2). The Lord even blessed his master’s home “for Joseph’s sake”(v.5).
Joseph would never have chosen to go to prison in Egypt. But he did when falsely accused of sexual assault. However, for the second time we read: “the Lord was with Joseph”(v.21). There, he gained the trust of the warden (v.22) so that “whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper”(v.23). His downward spiral into prison turned out to be the start of his rise to the top position in Egypt. Few people would choose to be promoted the way God promoted Joseph. But Joseph’s God blesses, despite, and even through, adverse circumstances.
God had a purpose for bringing Joseph to Egypt, and He has a purpose for placing us where we are. Instead of wishing that all things happened according to our will, we could say, as our Savior did before going to the cross, “Not as I will, but as You will”(Matt.26:39). — C. P. Hia |

Lord, it is far too easy to chase my own desires and
passions. Forgive me for my selfish wants and
pursuit of self-centered activities. Help me to place
You first and to look for what You are doing
and want to do in my life. |

Genesis 39:1-6,20-23
[1] Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. And Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there.
[2] The LORD was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
[3] And his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD made all he did to prosper in his hand.
[4] So Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put under his authority.
[5] So it was, from the time that he had made him overseer of his house and all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the LORD was on all that he had in the house and in the field.
[6] Thus he left all that he had in Joseph's hand, and he did not know what he had except for the bread which he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.
[20] Then Joseph's master took him and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners were confined. And he was there in the prison.
[21] But the LORD was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
[22] And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing.
[23] The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under Joseph's authority, because the LORD was with him; and whatever he did, the LORD made it prosper. | |

| 누구의 뜻? |

| 내 아버지여 만일 할 만하시거든 이 잔을 내게서 지나가게 하옵소서 그러나 나의 원대로 마시옵고 아버지의 원대로 하옵소서 — 마태복음 26:39 |
우리는 설날에 “뜻하신 대로 모든 일이 이루어지길 바랍니다.”라는 인사말을 흔하게 주고받습니다. 듣기에 아주 좋은 말이지만, 모든 일들이 나의 뜻이 아니라 하나님의 뜻대로 이루어질 때 최선의 결과가 나타납니다.
선택의 여지가 있었다면, 요셉은 애굽에서 노예로 살기를 바라지 않았을 것입니다(창 39:1). 하지만 갇혀있는 상황에서도 “여호와께서 요셉과 함께 하시므로”(2절) 요셉은 “형통”할 수 있었습니다. 하나님은 “요셉을 위하여”(5절) 그의 주인집에 복을 주시기까지 했습니다.
요셉은 애굽에서 감옥에 가기를 스스로 선택하지는 않았을 것입니다. 그러나 성추행으로 모함을 받고 옥에 갇히게 되었습니다. 하지만 우리는 여기서 “여호와께서 요셉과 함께 하시고”(21절)라는 구절을 다시 읽게 됩니다. 감옥에서 요셉은 간수장의 신임을 얻었고(22절) “여호와께서 그를 범사에 형통하게”(23절) 하셨습니다. 감옥에 갇히게까지 된 요셉의 추락은 그가 애굽 최고의 지위까지 오르게 되는 신분상승의 시발점이 되었습니다. 하나님이 요셉을 세우신 방법으로 높은 지위에 오르기를 선택할 사람은 거의 없을 것입니다. 그러나 요셉의 하나님은 악조건에도 불구하고, 아니 그 악조건들을 통해서 복을 내려주십니다.
하나님이 요셉을 애굽으로 데려오신 데에는 목적이 있었습니다. 그리고 우리를 현재 상황에 있게 하신 데에도 목적이 있습니다. 우리 뜻대로 모든 일들이 이루어지기를 바라기보다는, 우리 구주께서 십자가를 지시기 전에 말씀하셨던 것처럼 “나의 원대로 마시옵고 아버지의 원대로 하옵소서”(마 26:39)라고 우리도 말해야 할 것입니다. - C. P. Hia |

이기적인 욕구와 나 자신만을 위한 행동들을 추구하는 것을
용서하소서. 주님을 먼저 생각하고, 주님께서 내 삶에서
하고 계신 일과 하시려는 일들을 볼 수 있게
도와주소서.

[1] 요셉이 이끌려 애굽에 내려가매 바로의 신하 친위대장 애굽 사람 보디발이 그를 그리로 데려간 이스마엘 사람의 손에서 요셉을 사니라
[2] 여호와께서 요셉과 함께 하시므로 그가 형통한 자가 되어 그의 주인 애굽 사람의 집에 있으니
[3] 그의 주인이 여호와께서 그와 함께 하심을 보며 또 여호와께서 그의 범사에 형통하게 하심을 보았더라
[4] 요셉이 그의 주인에게 은혜를 입어 섬기매 그가 요셉을 가정 총무로 삼고 자기의 소유를 다 그의 손에 위탁하니
[5] 그가 요셉에게 자기의 집과 그의 모든 소유물을 주관하게 한 때부터 여호와께서 요셉을 위하여 그 애굽 사람의 집에 복을 내리시므로 여호와의 복이 그의 집과 밭에 있는 모든 소유에 미친지라
[6] 주인이 그의 소유를 다 요셉의 손에 위탁하고 자기가 먹는 음식 외에는 간섭하지 아니하였더라 요셉은 용모가 빼어나고 아름다웠더라
[20] 이에 요셉의 주인이 그를 잡아 옥에 가두니 그 옥은 왕의 죄수를 가두는 곳이었더라 요셉이 옥에 갇혔으나
[21] 여호와께서 요셉과 함께 하시고 그에게 인자를 더하사 간수장에게 은혜를 받게 하시매
[22] 간수장이 옥중 죄수를 다 요셉의 손에 맡기므로 그 제반 사무를 요셉이 처리하고
[23] 간수장은 그의 손에 맡긴 것을 무엇이든지 살펴보지 아니하였으니 이는 여호와께서 요셉과 함께 하심이라 여호와께서 그를 범사에 형통하게 하셨더라 | |
