The Huntington Library,

Art Collections and Botanical Gardens

The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens (or The Huntington) is a collections-based educational and research institution established by Henry E. Huntington (1850–1927) and located in Los Angeles County at San Marino, California, on the western coast of the United States, and about 35 miles northeast of the Pacific Ocean. In addition to the library, the institution houses an extensive art collection with a focus in 18th and 19th-century European art and 17th to mid-20th-century American art. The property also includes approximately 120 acres of specialized botanical landscaped gardens, most notably the "Japanese Garden", the "Desert Garden", and the "Chinese Garden" (Liu Fang Yuan). <Wikipedia> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huntington_Library

Japanese Bell (tsurigane)

Dated 1776 but recast after 1878, Bronze

Location: Japanese Garden

Bells were not typical features in traditional Japanese gardens but found their way to wealthy art collectors when Japanese government taxes forced Buddhist temples to sell their treasures in the early 1870s. The Huntington’s bell was purchased from Asian art dealer Nathan J. Sargent in 1914. Originally from the Chofuku temple in Yoshida, Ehime Perfecture, the bell is inscribed with its prior location, original date of casting, and the bell’s sponsors and donors. The large central vertical inscription recites a formulaic prayer translated to “Hail, great teacher, universal adamantine illuminator” in offer to the temple’s sect founder.
