After the American TV personality Ed McMahon
died in 2009, one newspaper headline read,
"When it came to being the No. 2 man, he was
No. 1." Best known for his 30-year tenure as
Johnny Carson's late-night sidekick, McMahon
excelled at help-ing Carson succeed in the
spotlight. While most entertainers strive for top
billing, McMahon was content with a supporting
role.
When the apostle Paul gave instruc-tions about
how to exercise our gifts as members of the
body of Christ (Rom. 12:3-8), he affirmed the
value of supporting roles. He began by saying
that we should have a realistic opinion of our-
selves (v.3), and he con-cluded with a call to
genuine, unsel-fish love: "Be kindly affectionate
to one another with brotherly love, in honor
giving preference to one another"(v.10). Or,
as J. B. Phillips translates it, "a willingness to let
the other man have the credit."
Our gifts and abilities come to us by God's grace
and are to be used by faith (vv.3,6) in love and
service for Christ―not for personal recognition.
May God grant us the ability to embrace with
enthusiasm the supporting roles to which He
calls us. The ultimate goal is His glory and not

텔레비전 코미디언 에드 맥마흔이 2009년에 죽자 한 신문이 이런 기사 제목을 뽑았습니다. “그는 2인자 노릇에는 1인자였다.” 30년 동안 자니 카슨의 심야방송의 보조 진행자로 가장 잘 알려졌던 그는 자니 카슨이 성공적으로 각광을 받도록 하는 일에 뛰어났습니다. 대부분의 연예인들이 최고의 보수를 받고자 노력하지만 맥마흔은 도와주는 역할에 만족했습니다.
바울사도는 그리스도의 몸의 지체로서 우리의 은사를 사용하는 것에 대해 지침을 주면서(롬 12:3-8) 돕는 역할의 가치를 강조했습니다. 그는 마땅히 생각할 그 이상의 생각을 품지 말고(3절), “형제를 사랑하여 서로 우애하고 존경하기를 서로 먼저 하라”(10절)라고 하면서 사심 없는 진실함으로 사랑하라고 했습니다. J.B. 필립스는 이것을 “다른 사람에게 기쁘게 영예를 돌리는 마음”이라고 번역했습니다.
우리의 은사와 능력은 하나님의 은혜로 받은 것이기에, 개인적으로 인정받기 위해서가 아니라 그리스도를 향한 사랑과 섬기는 마음을 가지고 믿음으로(3,6절) 그것들을 사용해야 합니다.
하나님이 우리를 부르신 대로 돕는 역할을 열심히 하도록 하나님이 우리에게 능력을 주시기를 바랍니다. 궁극적인 목적은 주님의 영광이지 우리의 영광이 아닙니다.
