The story is told of a young preacher named Augustus Toplady, who was taking a walk through the English countryside when a sudden storm swept across the landscape. Toplady spotted a wide rock formation with an opening—a cleft—where he sought shelter until the storm passed. As he sat out the deluge, he contemplated the connection between his shelter and God’s help in life’s storms.		아우구스투스 토플레디라는 젊은 목사의 이야기가 전해지고 있습니다. 그가 영국의 어느 시골길을 걷고 있는 동안 갑작스럽게 폭풍우가 휘몰아쳤습니다. 그는 큰 바위를 발견하고는 그 바위의 벌어진 틈 사이에 들어가 폭풍우가 지나갈 때까지 그 안에서 기다렸습니다. 폭풍우가 지나가기를 기다리면서 그는 지금 이 피난처와 인생의 폭풍우 속에서의 하나님의 도움과 어떠한 관계가 있는지 곰곰이 생각해보았습니다.
He had no paper to write on but found a playing card on the floor of the cavelike structure and began to write the words to the beloved hymn “Rock of Ages.”		그 때 그에게는 글을 쓸 종이가 없었는데, 마침 그 바위 굴 속 바닥에 버려져 있던 카드 한 장을 발견하고는 거기에다 오늘날 우리가 즐겨 부르는 찬송가 “만세반석 열리니”의 가사를 쓰기 시작하였습니다.
Written on that stormy day in 1775, this hymn has been a source of strength for Christians ever since.  Rock of ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee; Let the water and the blood, From Thy wounded side which flowed, Be of sin the double cure, Save from wrath and make me pure.		1775년 폭풍우가 휘몰아치던 날에 쓰인 이 찬송가는 그 이후로 오늘날까지 그리스도인 들에게 힘의 원천이 되고 있습니다.  만세반석 열리니  내가 들어갑니다  창에 허리 상하여  물과 피를 흘린 것  내게 효험 되어서  정결하게 하소서
Think of your struggles. Do you need a place to hide? Do you need Someone to shelter you from life’s assaults? Do you need the assurance that you’ve been forgiven? As Toplady experienced, we can find shelter and assurance in God.		당신이 겪고 있는 힘든 상황을 생각해보십시오. 피난처가 필요하십니까? 박해를 받고 있는 상황에서 피난처를 제공해주실 분이 필요하십니까? 잘못한 일에 대해서 용서를 받았다는 확신이 필요하십니까? 토플레디 목사가 경험하였듯이 우리도 하나님 안에서 피난처와 확신을 찾을 수 있습니다.
Don’t stand out in life’s storms alone. Seek God’s shelter. Ask Him to protect you. Make sure you have received His forgiveness. Get close to the Rock of Ages. It’s life’s safest spot. —Dave Branon		인생의 폭풍우가 휘몰아치는 순간에 홀로 서 있지 마십시오. 하나님께 피난처를 구하십시오. 하나님의 보호하심을 구하십시오. 하나님의 용서를 받았음을 확신하십시오. 그리고 만세반석이신 예수님께로 가까이 나아가십시오. 그곳이 인생의 가장 안전한 곳입니다.
When the world around you is crumbling,  God is the rock on which you can stand.		이 세상이 무너져 내릴 때 하나님은 우리가 서있을 수 있는 반석이다.

 

 

Psalm 18:30-36

 ³⁰ As for God, His way is blameless; 
The word of the LORD is tried; 
He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him. 
³¹ For who is God, but the LORD? 
And who is a rock, except our God, 
³² The God who girds me with strength 
And makes my way blameless? 
³³ He makes my feet like hinds’ feet, 
And sets me upon my high places. 
³⁴ He trains my hands for battle, 
So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. 
³⁵ You have also given me the shield of Your salvation, 
And Your right hand upholds me; 
And Your gentleness makes me great. 
³⁶ You enlarge my steps under me, 
And my feet have not slipped.
