| November 8, 2013 — by Philip Yancey | | | The Blessing Of Giving | | [ Mark 12:38 - 12:44 ] - hymn95 | | | It is more blessed to give than to receive. — Acts 20:35 | It made no sense for a widow to donate her last few coins to a corrupt institution in Jerusalem, where scribes who were dependent on those gifts “devour[ed] widows’ houses” (Mark 12:40). But in that woman’s act, Jesus saw a moving display of the proper attitude toward money (vv.41-44).
Gordon Cosby, while serving as pastor of the Church of the Saviour in Washington, DC, tells of a widow whose income was barely adequate to feed and clothe her six children. Yet every week she faithfully placed $4 in the offering plate. A deacon suggested that Cosby go to her and assure her that she could use the money instead for her family’s benefit.
Cosby followed the deacon’s advice—to his regret. “You are trying to take away the last thing that gives me dignity and meaning,” she said. She had learned a key to giving: It can benefit the giver more than the receiver. Yes, those in poverty need financial help. But the need to give may be as important as the need to receive.
The act of giving reminds us that we live by the grace of God—like the birds and the flowers. Those creations don’t worry about their future; neither should we. Giving offers us a way to express our confidence that God will care for us just as He cares for the sparrow and lily (Matt.6:25-34). |

[38] Then He said to them in His teaching, "Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces,
[39] "the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts,
[40] "who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation."
[41] Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much.
[42] Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans.
[43] So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury;
[44] "for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood." |
| | 2013년 11월 08일 (금) | | | 베풂의 축복 | | [ 마가복음 12:38 - 12:44 ] - 찬송가 95장 | | | 주는 것이 받는 것보다 복이 있다 - 사도행전 20:35 | “과부의 가산을 삼키며”(막 12:40) 그 같은 헌물에 의지하여 살아가는 타락한 서기관들이 득실대는 예루살렘에서, 어느 과부가 그들에게 마지막 남은 동전 몇 개를 헌금했다는 것이 전혀 납득이 가지를 않습니다. 그러나 예수님은 이 과부의 행동에서 돈에 관한 올바른 태도를 보여주는 감동적인 모습을 보셨습니다(41-44절).
고든 코스비는 그가 워싱턴에 소재한 구세주교회의 목사로 시무하고 있을 당시, 여섯 명의 자녀를 간신히 입히고 먹일만한 수입 밖에 없었던 어느 과부에 대한 이야기를 들려줍니다. 그녀는 그런 상황 속에서도 매주 4불씩 변함없이 헌금을 했습니다. 한 집사가 코스비에게 그녀를 찾아가 헌금을 하는 대신 그 돈을 가족을 위해 쓰도록 조언할 것을 제안했습니다.
코스비는 그 집사의 권고를 따랐다가 후회하고 말았습니다. “당신은 나의 품위를 지키게 하며 삶의 의미를 알게 하는, 내게 남은 단 하나의 일마저 빼앗아가려고 하는군요.”라고 그녀가 말했기 때문입니다. 그녀는 받는 것보다 주는 것이 복이 있다는, 베풂의 진수를 알고 있었습니다. 물론 궁핍한 사람들에게 재정적인 도움을 주는 일이 필요합니다. 그러나 그들에게도 주는 것이 받는 것 못지않게 중요할 것입니다.
베푸는 일은 마치 새나 꽃처럼 우리도 하나님의 은혜로 살아가고 있음을 되새기게 됩니다. 새나 꽃 같은 피조물들은 그들의 앞날에 대해 걱정하지 않습니다. 우리 또한 걱정하지 말아야 합니다. 베푸는 일은 하나님이 참새나 백합꽃을 돌보시듯이 우리도 돌보아주실 것이라는 확신을 표현하는 한 방법입니다(마 6:25-34). |
