Jim decided to follow Christ at the age of 10. Fifteen years later his commitment had faded. He had adopted a live-for-the-moment philosophy and developed some bad habits. Then his life seemed to fall apart. He had problems at work. Three family members died almost simultaneously. Fears and doubts began to plague Jim, and nothing seemed to help—until one day when he read Psalm 121:2, “My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” These words cut through the fear and confusion in his heart. He turned back to God for help, and God welcomed him.
Jim’s spiritual journey reminds me of ancient Israel’s history. The Israelites had a unique relationship with God—they were His chosen people(Neh.9:1-15). However, they spent many years rebelling and ignoring God’s goodness, turning away to follow their own path(vv.16-21). Yet when they returned to Him and repented, God was “ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abundant in kindness”(v.17).
These divine qualities encourage us to draw near to God—even after we have wandered away from Him. When we humbly abandon our rebellious ways and recommit ourselves to God’s ways, He will show compassion and welcome us back to closeness with Him.

[7] "You are the LORD God, Who chose Abram, And brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans, And gave him the name Abraham; [8] You found his heart faithful before You, And made a covenant with him To give the land of the Canaanites, The Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, And the Girgashites--To give it to his descendants. You have performed Your words, For You are righteous. [9] "You saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, And heard their cry by the Red Sea. [10] You showed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, Against all his servants, And against all the people of his land. For You knew that they acted proudly against them. So You made a name for Yourself, as it is this day. [11] And You divided the sea before them, So that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; And their persecutors You threw into the deep, As a stone into the mighty waters. [12] Moreover You led them by day with a cloudy pillar, And by night with a pillar of fire, To give them light on the road Which they should travel. [13] "You came down also on Mount Sinai, And spoke with them from heaven, And gave them just ordinances and true laws, Good statutes and commandments. [14] You made known to them Your holy Sabbath, And commanded them precepts, statutes and laws, By the hand of Moses Your servant. [15] You gave them bread from heaven for their hunger, And brought them water out of the rock for their thirst, And told them to go in to possess the land Which You had sworn to give them. [16] "But they and our fathers acted proudly, Hardened their necks, And did not heed Your commandments. [17] They refused to obey, And they were not mindful of Your wonders That You did among them. But they hardened their necks, And in their rebellion They appointed a leader To return to their bondage. [18] "Even when they made a molded calf for themselves, And said, 'This is your god That brought you up out of Egypt,' And worked great provocations, [19] Yet in Your manifold mercies You did not forsake them in the wilderness. The pillar of the cloud did not depart from them by day, To lead them on the road; Nor the pillar of fire by night, To show them light, And the way they should go. 돌아온 것을 환영합니다
[ 느헤미야 9:7 - 9:21 ] - 찬송가384장
주께서는 용서하시는 하나님이시라 은혜로우시며 긍휼히 여기시며 - 느헤미야 9:17
짐은 열 살 때 그리스도를 따르기로 다짐하였습니다. 그러나 15년이 지나자 그의 그 서약은 희미해졌습니다. 그는 눈앞의 현실만을 따지는 삶의 철학을 받아들이고 나쁜 습관들에 빠져들었습니다. 그때 그의 삶이 산산조각 나는 것처럼 보였습니다. 직장생활에 문제가 생기고, 가족 세 사람을 거의 동시에 잃었습니다. 짐은 두려움과 의심으로 괴로워하기 시작했지만 아무것도 도움이 되지 않았습니다. 그러던 어느 날 그는 “나의 도움은 천지를 지으신 여호와에게서로다”라는 시편 121편 2절 말씀을 읽게 되었습니다. 이 말씀이 그의 마음속에 있는 두려움과 혼란 속을 비집고 들어왔습니다. 그는 도움을 구해 하나님께로 다시 돌아왔고, 하나님은 그를 기꺼이 맞아 주셨습니다.
짐의 영적인 여정은 고대 이스라엘의 역사를 생각나게 해줍니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 그들이 하나님의 선택된 백성이라는(느 9:1-15), 하나님과의 특별한 관계를 가지고 있었습니다. 그러나 그들은 하나님께 등을 돌려 각기 제 길로 가며 수많은 세월을 하나님의 선하심을 배반하고 무시하며 보냈습니다(16-21절). 그렇지만 그들이 하나님께 돌아와 회개했을 때, 하나님은 “용서하시고 은혜로우시며, 긍휼히 여기시고 더디 노하시며, 인자가 풍부하신”(17절) 분이셨습니다.
비록 우리가 하나님으로부터 멀리 벗어나 방황했을지라도 이런 거룩한 하나님의 성품들이 그분께 가까이 가도록 우리를 격려해줍니다. 우리가 겸손하게 반항심을 내버리고 하나님의 길로 우리자신을 다시 헌신할 때, 하나님은 긍휼히 여기시며 하나님께 가까이 돌아온 것을 반갑게 맞아주실 것입니다.
[7] 주는 하나님 여호와시라 옛적에 아브람을 택하시고 갈대아 우르에서 인도하여 내시고 아브라함이라는 이름을 주시고 [8] 그의 마음이 주 앞에서 충성됨을 보시고 그와 더불어 언약을 세우사 가나안 족속과 헷 족속과 아모리 족속과 브리스 족속과 여부스 족속과 기르가스 족속의 땅을 그의 씨에게 주리라 하시더니 그 말씀대로 이루셨사오매 주는 의로우심이로소이다 [9] 주께서 우리 조상들이 애굽에서 고난 받는 것을 감찰하시며 홍해에서 그들의 부르짖음을 들으시고 [10] 이적과 기사를 베푸사 바로와 그의 모든 신하와 그의 나라 온 백성을 치셨사오니 이는 그들이 우리의 조상들에게 교만하게 행함을 아셨음이라 주께서 오늘과 같이 명예를 얻으셨나이다 [11] 또 주께서 우리 조상들 앞에서 바다를 갈라지게 하사 그들이 바다 가운데를 육지 같이 통과하게 하시고 쫓아오는 자들을 돌을 큰 물에 던짐 같이 깊은 물에 던지시고 [12] 낮에는 구름 기둥으로 인도하시고 밤에는 불 기둥으로 그들이 행할 길을 그들에게 비추셨사오며 [13] 또 시내 산에 강림하시고 하늘에서부터 그들과 말씀하사 정직한 규례와 진정한 율법과 선한 율례와 계명을 그들에게 주시고 [14] 거룩한 안식일을 그들에게 알리시며 주의 종 모세를 통하여 계명과 율례와 율법을 그들에게 명령하시고 [15] 그들의 굶주림 때문에 그들에게 양식을 주시며 그들의 목마름 때문에 그들에게 반석에서 물을 내시고 또 주께서 옛적에 손을 들어 맹세하시고 주겠다고 하신 땅을 들어가서 차지하라 말씀하셨사오나 [16] 그들과 우리 조상들이 교만하고 목을 굳게 하여 주의 명령을 듣지 아니하고 [17] 거역하며 주께서 그들 가운데에서 행하신 기사를 기억하지 아니하고 목을 굳게 하며 패역하여 스스로 한 우두머리를 세우고 종 되었던 땅으로 돌아가고자 하였나이다 그러나 주께서는 용서하시는 하나님이시라 은혜로우시며 긍휼히 여기시며 더디 노하시며 인자가 풍부하시므로 그들을 버리지 아니하셨나이다 [18] 또 그들이 자기들을 위하여 송아지를 부어 만들고 이르기를 이는 곧 너희를 인도하여 애굽에서 나오게 한 신이라 하여 하나님을 크게 모독하였사오나 [19] 주께서는 주의 크신 긍휼로 그들을 광야에 버리지 아니하시고 낮에는 구름 기둥이 그들에게서 떠나지 아니하고 길을 인도하며 밤에는 불 기둥이 그들이 갈 길을 비추게 하셨사오며 [20] 또 주의 선한 영을 주사 그들을 가르치시며 주의 만나가 그들의 입에서 끊어지지 않게 하시고 그들의 목마름을 인하여 그들에게 물을 주어 [21] 사십 년 동안 들에서 기르시되 부족함이 없게 하시므로 그 옷이 해어지지 아니하였고 발이 부르트지 아니하였사오며
