In November 1963, the same day that President John F. Kennedy was shot, another leader died—Clive Staples Lewis. This Oxford scholar, who had converted from atheism to Christianity, was a prolific writer. Intellectual books, science fiction, children’s fantasies, and other works flowed from his pen with a strong Christian message. His books have been used by God in the conversion of many, including a politician and a Nobel Prize-winning scientist.
Some are called to tell others about Christ through their writing, but all believers are called to be “epistles,” or letters of Christ, in the way we live. The apostle Paul tells us, “Clearly you are an epistle of Christ ... written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God”(2 Cor.3:3).
Certainly Paul does not mean we are actually pieces of paper upon which God’s message has been written. But as living “letters” we can illustrate how Jesus Christ makes a difference in how we treat others and strive to live with integrity.
Few will have the influence that C. S. Lewis did, but we are all called to bring glory to the one who loves us and has redeemed us!
Dear Lord, You have called me to be a witness for You wherever You have placed me. Every day my life is on display. Help me to live in such a way that others will want to know You and the abundant life You offer.
We are Christ’s “letters of recommendation”
to all who read our lives.
2 Corinthians 3:1-11
[1] Do we begin again to commend ourselves? Or do we need, as some others, epistles of commendation to you or letters of commendation from you? [2] You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men; [3] clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart. [4] And we have such trust through Christ toward God. [5] Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, [6] who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. [7] But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, [8] how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? [9] For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory. [10] For even what was made glorious had no glory in this respect, because of the glory that excels. [11] For if what is passing away was glorious, what remains is much more glorious.

살아 있는 편지
[ 고린도후서 3:1 - 3:11 ] - 찬송가585장
너희는…그리스도의 편지니…먹으로 쓴 것이 아니요 오직 살아 계신 하나님의 영으로 쓴 것이며 - 고린도후서 3:3
1963년 11월 존 F. 케네디 대통령이 저격된 날, 또 다른 지도자 클라이브 스테이플스 루이스가 죽었습니다. 무신론자였다가 기독교인이 되었던 이 옥스퍼드의 학자는 많은 책을 저술하였습니다. 강한 기독교적 메시지를 담은 학술서적, 공상과학소설, 환상적인 동화, 그밖에 다른 여러 책들이 그의 펜에서 흘러나왔습니다. 하나님은 그의 책을 사용하여 정치가, 노벨상을 수상한 과학자를 포함한 많은 사람들을 기독교로 개종하게 하셨습니다.
글을 통해서 그리스도를 전하도록 부름 받은 사람들도 있지만, 모든 믿는 사람들은 생활방식을 통해서 ‘서신’, 즉 그리스도의 편지가 되도록 부름을 받았습니다. 바울사도는 우리에게 이렇게 말합니다. “너희는…그리스도의 편지니…먹으로 쓴 것이 아니요 오직 살아 계신 하나님의 영으로 쓴 것이며”(고후 3:3).
물론 바울이 우리를 하나님의 메시지가 적힌 진짜 종이라고 말하고 있는 것은 아닙니다. 하지만 우리는 살아있는 ‘편지’로서, 다른 사람들을 대하는 방식이나 진실하게 살려고 애쓰는데 있어서 예수님이 어떻게 영향을 끼치시는지를 보여줄 수 있습니다.
C.S. 루이스 같은 영향력을 가진 사람은 드물겠지만, 우리는 모두 우리를 사랑하시고 우리를 구원하신 그분께 영광을 돌리도록 부름을 받았습니다.
사랑하는 주님, 어디로 보내시든 저를 주님의 증인이 되라고 불러주셨습니다. 매일 매일 저의 삶은
전시되고 있습니다. 다른 사람들이 저의 삶의 방식을 보고 주님과 주님이 주시는 풍성한 삶에 대해 알고 싶어 하도록 하는 그런 삶을 살 수 있게 도와주세요.
우리는 우리의 삶을 바라보는 모든 사람에게 예수님의 ‘추천서’이다.
고린도후서 3:1-11
[1] 우리가 다시 자천하기를 시작하겠느냐 우리가 어찌 어떤 사람처럼 추천서를 너희에게 부치거나 혹은 너희에게 받거나 할 필요가 있느냐 [2] 너희는 우리의 편지라 우리 마음에 썼고 뭇 사람이 알고 읽는 바라 [3] 너희는 우리로 말미암아 나타난 그리스도의 편지니 이는 먹으로 쓴 것이 아니요 오직 살아 계신 하나님의 영으로 쓴 것이며 또 돌판에 쓴 것이 아니요 오직 육의 마음판에 쓴 것이라 [4] 우리가 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님을 향하여 이같은 확신이 있으니 [5] 우리가 무슨 일이든지 우리에게서 난 것 같이 스스로 만족할 것이 아니니 우리의 만족은 오직 하나님으로부터 나느니라 [6] 그가 또한 우리를 새 언약의 일꾼 되기에 만족하게 하셨으니 율법 조문으로 하지 아니하고 오직 영으로 함이니 율법 조문은 죽이는 것이요 영은 살리는 것이니라 [7] 돌에 써서 새긴 죽게 하는 율법 조문의 직분도 영광이 있어 이스라엘 자손들은 모세의 얼굴의 없어질 영광 때문에도 그 얼굴을 주목하지 못하였거든 [8] 하물며 영의 직분은 더욱 영광이 있지 아니하겠느냐 [9] 정죄의 직분도 영광이 있은즉 의의 직분은 영광이 더욱 넘치리라 [10] 영광되었던 것이 더 큰 영광으로 말미암아 이에 영광될 것이 없으나 [11] 없어질 것도 영광으로 말미암았은즉 길이 있을 것은 더욱 영광 가운데 있느니라
