| Christ In The Storm |

| Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith? — Mark 4:40 |
At the age of 27, Rembrandt painted the seascape Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee based on the story in Mark 4. With its distinctive contrast of light and shadow, Rembrandt’s painting shows a small boat threatened with destruction in a furious storm. As the disciples struggle against the wind and waves, Jesus is undisturbed. The most unusual aspect, however, is the presence in the boat of a 13th disciple whom art experts say resembles Rembrandt himself.
Mark’s gospel describes the disciples’ vivid lesson about who Jesus is and what He can do. While they were frantically trying to save a sinking boat, Jesus was asleep. Didn’t He care that they were all about to die? (v.38). After Jesus calmed the storm (v.39), He asked the penetrating question, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” (v.40). Then they were even more afraid, exclaiming to each other, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”(v.41).
We could also put ourselves in this story and discover, just as Jesus’ disciples did, that to each person who trusts in Jesus Christ, He reveals His presence, compassion, and control in every storm of life. |

Mark 4:33-41
[33] And with many such parables He spoke the word to them as they were able to hear it.
[34] But without a parable He did not speak to them. And when they were alone, He explained all things to His disciples.
[35] on the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, "Let us cross over to the other side."
[36] Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him.
[37] And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.
[38] But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?"
[39] Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace, be still!" And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.
[40] But He said to them, "Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?"
[41] And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, "Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!" | |

| 폭풍 속의 그리스도 |

렘브란트는 27세 때에 마가복음 4장의 이야기를 바탕으로 ‘갈릴리호수의 폭풍과 그리스도’라는 바다 배경의 그림을 그렸습니다. 렘브란트의 그림은 빛과 그림자의 뚜렷한 대조를 써서 사나운 폭풍 속에서 부서질 것 같은 위협을 받고 있는 작은 배를 보여주고 있습니다. 제자들이 바람과 파도에 맞서 힘들어하고 있는 동안 주님은 평온히 계셨습니다. 그렇지만 가장 색다른 점은 렘브란트와 비슷하게 생겼다고 미술전문가들이 말하는 13번째 제자가 배 안에 있는 것입니다.
마가복음은 예수님이 어떤 분이시고 어떤 일을 하실 수 있는 분이신지를 제자들이 생생하게 학습하고 있는 것을 묘사하고 있습니다. 제자들이 가라앉는 배를 구하려고 미친 듯이 애쓰고 있는 동안, 예수님은 주무시고 계셨습니다. 주님은 그들이 죽게 된 것을 돌아보지 않으셨을까요?(38절). 폭풍을 잠잠하게 하신 후에(39절), 주님은 이렇게 예리한 질문을 하셨습니다. “어찌하여 이렇게 무서워하느냐 너희가 어찌 믿음이 없느냐”(40절). 그러자 그들은 더 두려워하여 서로 “그가 누구이기에 바람과 바다도 순종하는가”(41절)라고 하였습니다.
이 이야기에 우리 자신을 대입해볼 수 있습니다. 그러면 예수님의 제자들이 그랬던 것처럼, 예수 그리스도를 신뢰하는 각 사람에게 주님은 인생의 모든 폭풍 가운데에서 주님의 임재와 자비, 그리고 다스리심을 보여주신다는 것을 발견하게 될 것입니다. |

마가복음 4:33-41
[33] 예수께서 이러한 많은 비유로 그들이 알아 들을 수 있는 대로 말씀을 가르치시되
[34] 비유가 아니면 말씀하지 아니하시고 다만 혼자 계실 때에 그 제자들에게 모든 것을 해석하시더라
[35] 그 날 저물 때에 제자들에게 이르시되 우리가 저편으로 건너가자 하시니
[36] 그들이 무리를 떠나 예수를 배에 계신 그대로 모시고 가매 다른 배들도 함께 하더니
[37] 큰 광풍이 일어나며 물결이 배에 부딪쳐 들어와 배에 가득하게 되었더라
[38] 예수께서는 고물에서 베개를 베고 주무시더니 제자들이 깨우며 이르되 선생님이여 우리가 죽게 된 것을 돌보지 아니하시나이까 하니
[39] 예수께서 깨어 바람을 꾸짖으시며 바다더러 이르시되 잠잠하라 고요하라 하시니 바람이 그치고 아주 잔잔하여지더라
[40] 이에 제자들에게 이르시되 어찌하여 이렇게 무서워하느냐 너희가 어찌 믿음이 없느냐 하시니
[41] 그들이 심히 두려워하여 서로 말하되 그가 누구이기에 바람과 바다도 순종하는가 하였더라. | |
