If Kiera Wilmot had performed her experiment during her high school science class, it might have earned her an A. But instead she was charged with causing an explosion. Although she had planned to have her teacher approve the experiment, her classmates persuaded her to perform it outside the classroom. When she mixed chemicals inside a plastic bottle, it exploded and she unintentionally unsettled some fellow students.
The Old Testament tells the story of another case of peer pressure. David and his men were hiding from Saul in a cave when Saul entered (1 Sam.24). David’s companions suggested that God had delivered Saul to them, and they urged David to kill him (vv.4,10). If David killed Saul, they thought they could stop hiding and David could become king. But David refused to harm Saul because he was “the Lord’s anointed”(v.6).
People in our lives may sometimes suggest we do what seems most gratifying or practical in the moment. But there is a difference between worldly and spiritual wisdom (1 Cor.2:6-7). Wisdom from above “is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy” (James 3:17). When others are urging us to take a certain course of action, we can invite God to influence our response. — Jennifer Benson Schuldt |

1 Samuel 24:1-10
[1] Now it happened, when Saul had returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, "Take note! David is in the Wilderness of En Gedi."
[2] Then Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel, and went to seek David and his men on the Rocks of the Wild Goats.
[3] So he came to the sheepfolds by the road, where there was a cave; and Saul went in to attend to his needs. (David and his men were staying in the recesses of the cave.)
[4] Then the men of David said to him, "This is the day of which the LORD said to you, 'Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do to him as it seems good to you.'" And David arose and secretly cut off a corner of Saul's robe.
[5] Now it happened afterward that David's heart troubled him because he had cut Saul's robe.
[6] And he said to his men, "The LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the LORD'S anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD."
[7] So David restrained his servants with these words, and did not allow them to rise against Saul. And Saul got up from the cave and went on his way.
[8] David also arose afterward, went out of the cave, and called out to Saul, saying, "My lord the king!" And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed down.
[9] And David said to Saul: "Why do you listen to the words of men who say, 'Indeed David seeks your harm'?
[10] "Look, this day your eyes have seen that the LORD delivered you today into my hand in the cave, and someone urged me to kill you. But my eye spared you, and I said, 'I will not stretch out my hand against my lord, for he is the LORD'S anointed.' | |

만일 키에라 윌모트가 그녀의 고등학교 과학시간에 그 실험을 했었더라면 A학점을 받았을 것입니다. 그러나 그녀는 오히려 폭발을 일으켰다는 이유로 기소되었습니다. 그녀는 선생님으로부터 먼저 실험을 승인받으려고 계획했었지만, 급우들이 교실 밖에서 실험해보자고 그녀를 설득했습니다. 그녀가 플라스틱 병 안에 화학물질들을 넣고 서로 섞자, 그것이 폭발하여 본의 아니게 다른 학생들을 놀라게 했습니다.
구약성경에도 유사하게 주변의 압력에 대한 이야기가 있습니다. 다윗과 그의 사람들이 사울을 피해 굴에 숨어 있을 때 사울이 그 굴로 들어왔습니다(삼상 24장). 다윗의 동료들은 하나님이 사울을 그들에게 넘겨주셨다고 말하며 다윗에게 그를 죽이자고 강권했습니다(4,10절). 만일 다윗이 사울을 죽이면 그들은 숨어 다니는 일을 끝낼 수 있고 다윗이 왕이 될 수 있을 거라고 생각했습니다. 그러나 다윗은 사울이 “여호와의 기름 부음을 받은 자”(6절)라고 하며 그를 해치자는 제의를 거절했습니다.
우리 주위의 사람들이 때로는 그 당시로 봐서 가장 만족을 주는 것 같거나 쓸모 있게 보이는 일을 하도록 우리에게 권고할 때가 있습니다. 그러나 세상의 지혜와 영적 지혜는 다릅니다(고전 2:6-7). 위로부터 오는 지혜는 “첫째 성결하고 다음에 화평하고 관용하고 양순하며 긍휼과 선한 열매가 가득”(약 3:17)합니다. 다른 사람들이 우리에게 어떤 행동을 취하도록 강하게 권유할 때, 우리는 하나님께 우리가 어떻게 대처해야 하는지 여쭈어보아야 합니다. |

[1] 사울이 블레셋 사람을 쫓다가 돌아오매 어떤 사람이 그에게 말하여 이르되 보소서 다윗이 엔게디 광야에 있더이다 하니
[2] 사울이 온 이스라엘에서 택한 사람 삼천 명을 거느리고 다윗과 그의 사람들을 찾으러 들염소 바위로 갈새
[3] 길 가 양의 우리에 이른즉 굴이 있는지라 사울이 뒤를 보러 들어가니라 다윗과 그의 사람들이 그 굴 깊은 곳에 있더니
[4] 다윗의 사람들이 이르되 보소서 여호와께서 당신에게 이르시기를 내가 원수를 네 손에 넘기리니 네 생각에 좋은 대로 그에게 행하라 하시더니 이것이 그 날이니이다 하니 다윗이 일어나서 사울의 겉옷 자락을 가만히 베니라

[8] 그 후에 다윗도 일어나 굴에서 나가 사울의 뒤에서 외쳐 이르되 내 주 왕이여 하매 사울이 돌아보는지라 다윗이 땅에 엎드려 절하고
[9] 다윗이 사울에게 이르되 보소서 다윗이 왕을 해하려 한다고 하는 사람들의 말을 왕은 어찌하여 들으시나이까
[10] 오늘 여호와께서 굴에서 왕을 내 손에 넘기신 것을 왕이 아셨을 것이니이다 어떤 사람이 나를 권하여 왕을 죽이라 하였으나 내가 왕을 아껴 말하기를 나는 내 손을 들어 내 주를 해하지 아니하리니 그는 여호와의 기름 부음을 받은 자이기 때문이라 하였나이다 | |
