| Small Ways In Small Places |

| For who has despised the day of small things? — Zechariah 4:10 |
Often I meet with people who serve in what they think are seemingly small ways in small places. They are frequently discouraged by loneliness, feeling that their acts of service are insignificant. When I hear them speak, I think of one of the angels in C. S. Lewis’ book Out of the Silent Planet. He said: “My people have a law never to speak of sizes or numbers to you.... It makes you do reverence to nothings and pass by what is really great.”
Sometimes culture says bigger is better—that size is the truest measure of success. It takes a strong person to resist that trend, especially if he or she is laboring in a small place. But we must not “pass by what is really great.”
It’s not that numbers aren’t important (after all, the apostles counted their converts; see Acts 2:41). Numbers represent living people with eternal needs. We should all work and pray for large numbers of people to enter the kingdom, but numbers mustn’t be the basis for self-esteem.
God doesn’t call us to find fulfillment in the amount of work we do for Him, or the number of people who are a part of that work, but in faithfully doing our work for His sake. Serving our great God with His strength in a small way is not a stepping-stone to greatness—it is greatness. — David Roper |

small places or small people. All are precious
in Your sight. May I see the value of my work
and cherish it as You do. |

Isaiah 49:1-6
[1] "Listen, O coastlands, to Me, And take heed, you peoples from afar! The LORD has called Me from the womb; From the matrix of My mother He has made mention of My name.
[2] And He has made My mouth like a sharp sword; In the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me, And made Me a polished shaft; In His quiver He has hidden Me."
[3] "And He said to me, 'You are My servant, O Israel, In whom I will be glorified.'
[4] Then I said, 'I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and in vain; Yet surely my just reward is with the LORD, And my work with my God.'"
[5] "And now the LORD says, Who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant, To bring Jacob back to Him, So that Israel is gathered to Him (For I shall be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, And My God shall be My strength),
[6] Indeed He says, 'It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob, And to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.'" | |

나는 종종 자신이 하찮은 곳에서 사소하게 봉사한다고 생각하는 사람들을 만나곤 합니다. 그들은 자주 자신의 봉사가 별로 대단치 않다고 생각하며, 외로움에 낙담하곤 합니다. 그들이 말하는 것을 들으면, 나는 씨 에스 루이스의 저서 《침묵의 행성으로부터》에 나오는 한 천사가 생각납니다. 그 천사는 이렇게 말했습니다. “우리에게는 결코 크기나 숫자를 네게 말하지 않는다는 규칙이 있다…그것은 너로 하여금 아무것도 아닌 것을 숭상하게 하고, 정말 위대한 것은 놓치게 만들기 때문이다.”
우리 시대의 문화에서는 클수록 더 좋고, 성공의 진정한 척도가 크기인 경우가 종종 있습니다. 강한 사람들만이 그런 경향에 맞설 수 있습니다. 특히 하찮은 곳에서 수고하고 있는 사람들의 경우에는 더 그렇습니다. 하지만 우리는 “정말 위대한 것을 놓쳐서는” 안 됩니다.
숫자가 중요하지 않다는 것은 아닙니다(사실 사도들도 회심한 사람들의 숫자를 세었습니다. 사도행전 2장 41절을 보십시오). 숫자는 영생을 필요로 하는 살아있는 사람들을 나타냅니다. 우리 모두는 많은 숫자의 사람들이 천국에 들어가도록 일하고 기도해야 하지만, 숫자가 자부심의 근거가 되어서는 안 됩니다.
하나님은 우리가 그분을 위해 하는 일의 양이나 그 일에 관련된 사람들의 숫자가 아니라, 그분을 위해 성실히 우리 임무를 완수하는 것에서 보람을 찾으라고 우리를 부르신 것입니다. 그렇다고 위대하신 하나님을 그분이 주시는 힘으로 사소하게 섬기는 행위가 위대함으로 이끄는 디딤돌은 아닙니다. 오히려 그 행위 자체가 바로 위대한 것입니다. |

주님, 하찮은 곳, 하찮은 사람은 없다는 것을
기억하게 하소서. 주님 보시기에는 모든 것이
다 소중합니다. 저로 하여금 주님이 보시듯이
제 일의 가치를 보고 소중히 여길 수 있게 하소서. |

하나님의 방식으로 하나님의 일을 하는 사람은
누구나 하나님이 보시기에 중요하다. |

이사야 49:1-6
[1] 섬들아 내게 들으라 먼 곳 백성들아 귀를 기울이라 여호와께서 태에서부터 나를 부르셨고 내 어머니의 복중에서부터 내 이름을 기억하셨으며
[2] 내 입을 날카로운 칼 같이 만드시고 나를 그의 손 그늘에 숨기시며 나를 갈고 닦은 화살로 만드사 그의 화살통에 감추시고
[3] 내게 이르시되 너는 나의 종이요 내 영광을 네 속에 나타낼 이스라엘이라 하셨느니라
[4] 그러나 나는 말하기를 내가 헛되이 수고하였으며 무익하게 공연히 내 힘을 다하였다 하였도다 참으로 나에 대한 판단이 여호와께 있고 나의 보응이 나의 하나님께 있느니라
[5] 이제 여호와께서 말씀하시나니 그는 태에서부터 나를 그의 종으로 지으신 이시요 야곱을 그에게로 돌아오게 하시는 이시니 이스라엘이 그에게로 모이는도다 그러므로 내가 여호와 보시기에 영화롭게 되었으며 나의 하나님은 나의 힘이 되셨도다
