| Though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand. - Psalm 37:24 |
The clock tower at Westminster, which contains the bell known as Big Ben, is an iconic landmark in London, England. It is traditionally thought that the melody of the tower chimes was taken from the tune of “I Know That My Redeemer Liveth” from Handel’s Messiah. Words were eventually added and put on display in the clock room:
Lord, through this hour be Thou our guide;
So by Thy power no foot shall slide.
These words allude to Psalm 37: “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand”(vv.23-24 nlt). Notice how intimately involved God is in His children’s experience: “He delights in every detail of their lives”(v.23 nlt). Verse 31 adds, “The law of their God is in their hearts; their feet do not slip.”
How extraordinary! The Creator of the universe not only upholds us and helps us but He also cares deeply about every moment we live. No wonder the apostle Peter was able to confidently invite us to “cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you”(1 Peter 5:7). As the assurance of His care rings in our hearts, we find courage to face whatever comes our way. |

Psalm 37:21-31
[21] The wicked borrows and does not repay, But the righteous shows mercy and gives.
[22] For those blessed by Him shall inherit the earth, But those cursed by Him shall be cut off.
[23] The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way.
[24] Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the LORD upholds him with His hand.
[25] I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread.
[26] He is ever merciful, and lends; And his descendants are blessed.
[27] Depart from evil, and do good; And dwell forevermore.
[28] For the LORD loves justice, And does not forsake His saints; They are preserved forever, But the descendants of the wicked shall be cut off.
[29] The righteous shall inherit the land, And dwell in it forever.
[30] The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, And his tongue talks of justice.
[31] The law of his God is in his heart; None of his steps shall slide. |

‘빅벤’으로 알려진 종이 있는 웨스트민스터의 시계탑은 영국 런던의 상징적인 명소입니다. 그 탑 종소리의 멜로디는 전통적으로 헨델의 메시아 중 “내 주는 살아 계시고”의 곡조에서 따왔다고 전해집니다. 거기에 나중에 가사를 붙였고, 그 가사는 시계방 안에 전시되어 있습니다.
주여, 이 시간 우리를 이끌어주셔서
주님의 권능으로 실족하지 않게 하소서
이 가사는 시편 37편을 떠올려줍니다. “여호와께서 사람의 걸음을 정하시고 그의 길을 기뻐하시나니 그는 넘어지나 아주 엎드러지지 아니함은 여호와께서 그의 손으로 붙드심이로다”(23-24절). 하나님이 그분의 자녀들의 일상에 얼마나 밀접하게 관여하시는지를 보십시오. “여호와께서 사람의 걸음을 정하시고”(23절). 31절에 덧붙이기를 “그의 마음에는 하나님의 법이 있으니 그의 걸음은 실족함이 없으리로다.”
얼마나 놀랍습니까! 우주의 창조주께서 우리를 붙들고 도우실 뿐 아니라, 우리가 사는 순간순간을 철저히 보살펴주십니다. 베드로사도가 “너희 염려를 다 주께 맡기라 이는 그가 너희를 돌보심이라”(벧전 5:7)라고 자신 있게 우리에게 권유할 수 있었던 것도 전혀 놀라운 일이 아닙니다. 하나님의 돌보심에 대한 확신이 우리 마음에 울릴 때, 우리에게 다가오는 어떤 것에도 마주할 수 있는 담력을 얻게 됩니다. |
