“The Little Drummer Boy” is a popular Christmas song written in 1941. It was originally known as “Carol of the Drum” and is based on a traditional Czech carol. Although there isn’t any reference to a drummer boy in the Christmas story in Matthew 1–2 and Luke 2, the point of the carol goes straight to the heart of the meaning of worship. The carol describes how a boy is summoned by the Magi to the scene of Christ’s birth. Unlike the wise men, however, the drummer has no gift—so he gives what he has. He plays his drum, saying, “I played my best for Him.”		“북치는 소년”은 1941년에 지어져 널리 알려진 크리스마스 노래입니다. 본래 “드럼 캐럴”로 알려졌던 이 노래는 전통적인 체코 캐럴을 기초로 하고 있습니다. 마태복음 1-2장이나 누가복음 2장의 크리스마스 이야기에는 북치는 소년에 관한 언급이 없지만, 이 캐럴의 요점은 예배의 핵심적인 의미를 정확하게 가르쳐줍니다. 이 캐럴은 소년이 어떻게 동방박사들에 의해 그리스도의 탄생의 장소에 불려 들어갔는지를 설명하고 있습니다. 그렇지만 동방박사들과는 달리 북치는 소년은 드릴 선물이 없어서 그가 가지고 있는 것을 드립니다. 그는 북을 치면서 “주님을 위해 최선을 다해서 북을 쳤습니다.”라고 말합니다.
This echoes the worship Jesus described when He told of the widow and her two coins: “ ‘Truly I tell you,’ he said, ‘this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on’ ” (LUKE 21:3-4).		이것은 예수님이 과부와 과부의 동전 두 개에 관해 언급하셨을 때 설명하신 예배를 그대로 보여줍니다. “내가 참으로 너희에게 말하노니 이 가난한 과부가 모든 사람보다 많이 넣었도다 저들은 그 풍족한 중에서 헌금을 넣었거니와 이 과부는 그 구차한 중에서 자기의 있는 바 생활비 전부를 넣었느니라”(누가복음 21:3-4).
All the drummer boy had was his drum and all the poor widow had were her two coins, but the God they worshiped was worthy of their all. He is worthy of our all as well, having given His all for us. -BILL CROWDER		북치는 소년에게는 북이 그가 가진 전부였고 가난한 과부에게는 동전 두 개가 전부였지만, 그들이 경배했던 하나님은 그들이 가진 모든 것을 기꺼이 바칠 만한 분이셨습니다. 우리를 위해 모든 것을 주신 주님은 우리의 모든 것을 받으실 만한 분이십니다.

Insight: In both the Old and New Testaments, the Scriptures challenge the people of God to show concern for the marginalized. For example, Deuteronomy (신명기) 14:29 says: “At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year’s produce and store it in your towns, so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied.” In the New Testament, the church at Jerusalem established a ministry for the care of widows (Acts 6), and James says the care of widows and orphans is the mark of true religion (James 1:27).
