Everybody was wrong about the ark of the covenant (an item in the tabernacle that represented the throne of God). After losing a battle to the Philistines, Israel sent messengers to Shiloh to ask that the ark be hauled to Ebenezer, the site of their army camp.		모든 사람들이 언약궤(성막에 보관된 하나님의 왕권을 대표하는 상자)에 대해 잘못 이해하고 있었습니다. 블레셋과의 전쟁에서 패하자 이스라엘 사람들은 실로로 사람을 보내어 그들이 진을 치고 있는 에벤에셀로 언약궤를 보내라고 하였습니다.
When the ark arrived, the Israelites celebrated so loudly the enemy heard them all the way over in Aphek. The ark’s arrival caused the Philistines to fear and the Israelites to have courage.		언약궤가 도착하여 이스라엘 사람들이 큰 소리로 기뻐하자 그 소리가 아벡에 있는 적군에게까지 들렸습니다. 언약궤의 도착으로 블레셋 사람들은 두려워하였고, 이스라엘 사람들은 용기를 가지게 되었습니다.
They were both wrong. The Israelites took the ark into battle and were again clobbered by the Philistines, who captured the ark. Another mistake. The Philistines got sick and their false gods were destroyed.		그런데 양쪽 다 잘못 생각하고 있었습니다. 이스라엘 사람들은 언약궤를 전쟁터로 가져갔으나 또 다시 블레셋 사람들에게 대패하고 언약궤마저 빼앗겨버렸습니다. 블레셋 사람들이 언약궤를 취한 것은 또 다른 실수였습니다. 그들에게 병이 생기고 그들의 우상들이 파괴되었습니다.
We can understand the Philistines’ error—they were idol-worshipers. But the Israelites should have known better. They failed to consult God about using the ark. While they knew that the ark was earlier carried in battle (Josh. 6), they didn’t consider that God’s plan, not the ark’s involvement, allowed Israel to defeat Jericho.		블레셋 사람들의 실수는 이해가 됩니다. 왜냐하면, 그들은 우상을 숭배하는 자들이었기 때문입니다. 그러나 이스라엘 사람들은 알고 있었어야 했습니다. 그들은 언약궤를 사용하는데 있어 하나님의 의견을 물어보지 않았습니다. 그들은 예전에 전쟁터에 언약궤를 들고 간 적이 있다는(여호수아 6장) 것은 알고 있었지만, 여리고성을 함락시킨 것이 하나님의 계획에 의한 것이었지 언약궤 때문이 아니었다는 것을 생각지 못했습니다.
No matter our resources, we will fail unless we use them according to God’s plan. Philistines Take the Ark in Victory

 ¹ Thus the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to meet the Philistines in battle and camped beside ^(A)Ebenezer while the Philistines camped in ^(B)Aphek. ² The Philistines drew up in battle array to meet Israel. When the battle spread, Israel was ^[a]defeated before the Philistines who killed about four thousand men on the battlefield. ³ When the people came into the camp, the elders of Israel said, “^(C)Why has the LORD defeated us today before the Philistines?^(D)Let us take to ourselves from Shiloh the ark of the covenant of the LORD, that ^[b]it may come among us and deliver us from the power of our enemies.” ⁴ So the people sent to Shiloh, and from there they carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts ^(E)who sits above the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, werethere with the ark of the covenant of God.

 ⁵ As the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, ^(F)all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth resounded. ⁶ When the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, “What does the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” Then they understood that the ark of the LORD had come into the camp. ⁷ The Philistines were afraid, for they said, “God has come into the camp.” And they said, “^(G)Woe to us! For nothing like this has happened before. ⁸ Woe to us! Who shall deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods who smote the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness. ^9 (H)Take courage and be men, O Philistines, or you will becomeslaves to the Hebrews, ^(I)as they have been slaves to you; therefore, be men and fight.”

 ¹⁰ So the Philistines fought and ^(J)Israel was^[c]defeated, and ^(K)every man fled to his tent; and the slaughter was very great, for there fell of Israel thirty thousand foot soldiers. ¹¹ And the ark of God was taken; and ^(L)the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.
