On a lovely summer evening, a capacity crowd gathered in a beautiful outdoor venue for a concert by one of my college friends. It happened to be his birthday, so the emcee hinted that we might want to sing “Happy Birthday” to him. one by one, people started singing, each in a different key, each at a different tempo. As the jumble of notes and words joined together, the result was, well, less than harmonic. It wasn’t even melodious. It was in fact downright pitiful. When my friend took the stage, he gave us another chance. He didn’t give us the pitch, but he did give us a downbeat, so at least we were singing together. By the end of the song most people were somewhat close to the same key.		어느 아름다운 여름날 저녁, 나의 한 대학 친구가 공연하는 음악회를 보기 위해 많은 사람들이 야외음악당을 가득 메웠습니다. 마침 그날이 그의 생일이어서, 사회자는 그를 위해 “생일축하” 노래를 불러주자고 귀띔해주었습니다. 한 사람, 한 사람 노래를 부르기 시작했는데 각각 다른 음정과 다른 박자로 나왔습니다. 음정과 가사가 뒤죽박죽이 되면서 결국 노래가 조화를 이루지 못했습니다. 곡조조차도 맞지가 않았습니다. 사실 정말 한심하였습니다. 내 친구가 무대로 올라와서 우리에게 한 번 더 기회를 주었습니다. 그가 첫 음을 주지는 않았지만 박자를 맞추어주었기 때문에, 우리는 최소한 같이 노래를 부를 수 있었습니다. 노래가 끝날 때쯤에는 대부분의 사람들이 비슷한 음정으로 부르게 되었습니다.
The noise that was supposed to be a song reminded me of a problem in a first-century church. They couldn’t agree on their leader. Some followed Paul; others Apollos (1 Cor. 3:4). The result was conflict and division (v.3). Instead of music, they were making noise. When people don’t agree on a leader, they all “sing” (I’m speaking metaphorically here) at the pace and pitch most comfortable for them.		마땅히 노래가 되었어야 했던 그 잡음은 나에게 초대 교회가 가졌던 문제를 생각나게 해주었습니다. 그들은 자신들의 리더에 대한 의견이 분분했습니다. 어떤 이들은 바울을, 다른 이들은 아볼로를 따랐습니다 (고린도전서 3:4). 결과는 갈등과 분열이었습니다(3절). 음악을 만들기보다는 그들은 잡음을 만들었습니다. 리더에 대해 의견이 일치하지 않을 때, 사람들은 모두 자신에게 편한 박자와 음정으로 “노래”를 부르는 것(은유적으로 말해서)입니다.

Lord, give us wisdom. We know it’s good  to follow the example of our godly leaders,  but help us not to think so highly of them  that we worship them instead of You. Amen.		주님, 지혜를 주소서. 우리의 영적  리더들의 본을 따라야 함을 알지만  그들을 높임으로 주님 대신 그들을  경배하지 않도록 우리를 도와주소서. 아멘

Foundations for Living

 ¹ And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to^(A)spiritual men, but as to ^(B)men of flesh, as to^(C)infants in Christ. ² I gave you ^(D)milk to drink, not solid food; for you ^(E)were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able,³ for you are still fleshly. For since there is^(F)jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking ^[a](G)like mere men? ⁴ For when ^(H)one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not mere^(I)men?

 ⁵ What then is Apollos? And what is Paul?^(J)Servants through whom you believed, even^(K)as the Lord gave opportunity to each one. ^6 (L)I planted, ^(M)Apollos watered, but ^(N)God was causing the growth. ⁷ So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth. ⁸ Now he who plants and he who waters are one; but each will^(O)receive his own ^[b]reward according to his own labor. ⁹ For we are God’s ^(P)fellow workers; you are God’s ^[c](Q)field, God’s ^(R)building.

 ¹⁰ According to ^(S)the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder ^(T)I laid a foundation, and ^(U)another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it. ¹¹For no man can lay a ^(V)foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. ¹² Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, ^[d]precious stones, wood, hay, straw, ^13(W)each man’s work will become evident; for ^(X)the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test ^[e]the quality of each man’s work. ¹⁴ If any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will ^(Y)receive a reward. ¹⁵ If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet ^(Z)so as through fire.

 ^16 (AA)Do you not know that ^(AB)you are a^[f]temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? ¹⁷ If any man destroys the ^[g]temple of God, God will destroy him, for the ^[h]temple of God is holy, and ^[i]that is what you are.
