I love cinnamon. I love cinnamon rolls, cinnamon graham crackers, cinnamon candies, cinnamon toast, cinnamon apples, and cinnamon pretzels. Cinnamon is one of those spices that makes other things taste better. However, it never crossed my mind to think about where cinnamon comes from. Then, on a recent trip to Sri Lanka, I learned that 90 percent of all the cinnamon in the world comes from that island nation located in the Indian Ocean. For all of the cinnamon I’ve enjoyed over the years, I never stopped to consider its source.		나는 계피를 좋아하기에 계피빵, 계피과자, 계피사탕, 계피토스트, 계피사과, 계피꽈배기 등을 아주 좋아합니다. 계피는 다른 음식들을 더 맛있게 해주는 향신료 중의 하나입니다. 나는 계피를 그렇게 좋아하면서도 그 원산지가 어딘지에 대해서는 관심이 없었습니다. 그런데 최근에 스리랑카로 여행 갔다가 세계 계피 수요의 90 퍼센트가 인도양에 위치한 바로 이 작은 섬나라에서 생산된다는 것을 알았습니다. 오랫동안 계피를 즐겨 먹었으면서도 그 출처에 대해서는 한 번도 생각해 보지 않았던 것이었습니다.
Sadly, my walk with Christ is sometimes like that. God has blessed me with a wonderful wife, five children, and grandchildren who are more fun than a barrel of monkeys. In the midst of my enjoyment of them, however, I sometimes fail to consider the source of those blessings—what the hymnwriter called the “fount of every blessing.” James put it like this: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning” (1:17).		서글프게도 내가 예수님과 동행하는 삶도 때때로 이와 같습니다. 하나님은 나에게 훌륭한 아내와 다섯 명의 자녀, 그리고 원숭이들 보다도 더 나를 즐겁게 해주는 손자손녀들을 허락해주셨습니다. 이들과 함께 즐겁게 지내면서도 어느 찬송가작가가 “복의 근원”이라고 부른, 그 모든 축복의 근원에 대해서 생각하지 못할 때가 가끔씩 있습니다. 야고보는 축복의 근원을 이렇게 표현합니다. “각양 좋은 은사와 온전한 선물이 다 위로부터 빛들의 아버지께로서 내려오나니 그는 변함도 없으시고 회전하는 그림자도 없으시니라”(1:17).
How ungrateful we would be to enjoy the rich blessings of life without thanking the Father who is the source of all of creation. —Bill Crowder		우리 삶에 허락하신 풍성한 축복을 마음껏 누리면서도 우리가 모든 창조의 근원되시는 하나님 아버지께 감사하지 않는다면 우리는 정녕 은혜를 모르는 것이겠지요.

Gratitude is a God-honoring attitude.		감사는 하나님을 영화롭게 하는 태도이다.

 

James 1:12-18
