The acts of generosity and good will that flourish in December often fade quickly, causing many to say, “I wish we could keep the Christmas spirit all year long.” Why does it seem that kindness and compassion are chained to the calendar? Is there an ever-flowing fountain of compassion deeper than warm holiday feelings that pass with the season?		12월이면 넘쳐나는 관대한 아량과 선의에 찬 행동들이 시간이 지나면서 금방 사라져버리기에, 많은 사람들이 “크리스마스 정신을 일 년 내내 갖고 살면 얼마나 좋을까!”라고 말하곤 합니다. 왜 친절하고 서로를 위해 주는 마음이 꼭 달력에 매여 있어야 할까요? 성탄절이 지나면 사라지고 마는 연말의 훈훈한 감정보다 더 진심어린 동정심이 끊임없이 솟아나는 샘은 없을까요?
In the first two chapters of Luke, it is striking that the Holy Spirit is mentioned seven times. His work is cited in the lives of the unborn John the Baptist (1:15), Mary (1:35), Elizabeth (1:41), Zacharias (1:67), and Simeon (2:25-27). Here, in what we often call “the Christmas story,” there is no mention of people having something just come to mind or of feeling strangely moved. Instead, the Holy Spirit is identified as the one who guided Simeon, filled Zacharias and Elizabeth, and created the baby in Mary’s womb.		누가복음의 처음 두 장에는 참으로 놀랍게도 성령님이 일곱 번이나 언급되어 있습니다. 성령님의 역사가 아직 태어나지 않은 세례요한(1:15)과 마리아(1:35), 엘리사벳(1:41), 사가랴(1:67), 그리고 시므온(2:25-27)의 삶속에 열거됩니다. 우리가 흔히 “크리스마스 이야기”라고 부르는 이 부분은 어떤 생각이 갑자기 떠오른 사람들이나 이상한 감동을 받은 감정에 대해서는 아무런 언급도 하지 않습니다. 그 대신에, 성령님이 바로 시므온을 인도하셨고,사가랴와 엘리사벳 두 사람 속에 충만하셨으며, 마리아를 잉태케 하신 분이라는 것을 확인해주고 있습니다.
Do we, like them, recognize the Spirit’s voice in the midst of all others? Are we alert to His promptings and eager to obey? Will we allow His warmth and love to fill our hearts and flow through our hands?		그들처럼 우리도 다른 사람들과 함께 있을 때에 성령님의 음성을 듣고 있습니까? 성령님이 일러주시는 것을 들을 준비, 그리고 그것에 지체 없이 순종할 준비가 되어 있습니까? 그래서 그분의 따뜻한 사랑이 우리의 마음을 채우고 우리의 손을 통해서 전해질 수 있게 하시겠습니까?
Today, the presence and power of Christ remain with us through the Holy Spirit, who is the true, eternal Spirit of Christmas—all year long. —David McCasland		오늘날에는 그리스도의 임재와 능력이 성령님을 통해 우리 안에 머무르고 계십니다. 그 성령님이 일 년 내내 역사하는 참되고 영원한 크리스마스 정신입니다.

Jesus went away so the Spirit could come to stay.		성령님이 오셔서 함께 계실 수 있도록 예수님이 우리를 떠나셨다.

 

Luke 1:31-41

³¹ And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you ^(A)shall name Him Jesus. ³² He will be great and will be called the Son of ^(B)the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him ^(C)the throne of His father David; ^33(D)and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, ^(E)and His kingdom will have no end.”³⁴ Mary said to the angel, “How ^[a]can this be, since I ^[b]am a virgin?” ³⁵ The angel answered and said to her, “^(F)The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of ^(G)the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason ^(H)the^[c]holy Child shall be called ^(I)the Son of God.³⁶ And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and^[d]she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. ³⁷ For ^[e](J)nothing will be impossible with God.” ³⁸ And Mary said, “Behold, the^[f]bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Mary Visits Elizabeth

 ³⁹ Now ^[g]at this time Mary arose and went in a hurry to ^(K)the hill country, to a city of Judah,⁴⁰ and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. ⁴¹ When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was ^(L)filled with the Holy Spirit.
