The apostle Paul had one overriding desire: that fellow Jews would embrace the Messiah he had encountered. “I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart,” he said. “For I could wish that I myself were . . . cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers” (Rom. 9:2-3 niv). Yet in city after city his fellow Jews rejected him and the Christ he preached.		바울사도에게는 꼭 이루고 싶은 열망이 하나 있었는데, 그것은 자기가 만난 메시아를 형제 유대인들이 받아들이는 것이었습니다. “내게 큰 근심이 있는 것과 마음에 그치지 않는 고통이 있는 것을......나의 형제를......위하여......내 자신이......그리스도에게서 끊어질지라도 원하는 바로라”(로마서 9:2-3)라고그는 말했습니다. 그렇지만 가는 도시마다 그의 형제 유대인들은 그와 그가 전하는 그리스도를 배척했습니다.
In his most elegant letter, Paul set as his centerpiece (Rom. 9–11) a passionate passage in which he struggled openly with this great unanswered prayer of his life. He acknowledged one important side benefit of this distressing development: The Jews’ rejection of Jesus led to His acceptance by the Gentiles. Paul concluded that God hadn’t rejected the Jews; to the contrary, they had the same opportunity as Gentiles. God had widened, not closed, the embrace of humanity.		바울은 그의 가장 우아한 편지 로마서의 중심부(로마서 9-11장)에서 아주 열정적인 구절로 그의 생애의 응답되지 않았던 이 중대한 기도를 가지고 고투하는 모습을 솔직하게 기록했습니다. 그는 이 힘들게 진행되는 상황을 통해 한 가지 부수적인 중요한 혜택도 있다는 것을 인정하였습니다. 예수님에 대한 유대인들의 배척이 이방인들로 하여금 주님을 영접하도록 이끈 것입니다. 바울은 하나님이 유대인을 배척하신 것이 아니라, 그 반대로 그들도 이방인들과 똑같은 기회가 주어졌던 것이라고 결론을 내립니다. 하나님은 인류를 포용하신 범위를 확대하신 것이지 닫으신 것이 아닙니다.
Paul’s prose began to soar as he stepped back to consider the big picture. And then came this burst of doxology: Oh, the depth of the riches  both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!  How unsearchable are His judgments  and His ways past finding out! (Rom. 11:33).		큰 그림을 보기 위해 뒤로 물러서자 바울의 문장들은 한층 돋보이기 시작하여, 이런 찬송이 뒤이어 터져 나왔습니다. 깊도다 하나님의 지혜와  지식의 부요함이여  그의 판단은 측량치 못할 것이며  그의 길은 찾지 못할 것이로다(로마서 11:33).
The unsolved mysteries and unanswered prayers all fade to gray against the panorama of God’s plan for the ages.		모든 풀리지 않은 비밀과 응답되지 않은 기도는 다 영원을 위한 하나님의 장엄한 계획 앞에서 희미해져 사라져버릴 것입니다.
In the end, unanswered prayer brings me face to face with the mystery that silenced Paul: the profound difference between my perspective and God’s. —Philip Yancey		그리고 마지막 그때에는 응답되지 않은 기도를 통해, 바울을 침묵하게 만들었던 비밀, 즉 나의 관점과 하나님의 관점의 깊은 차이를 직접 대면할 수 있게 될 것입니다.

Romans 11:26-36

²⁶ and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written,

   “^(A)THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION, 
HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB.” 
²⁷ “^(B)THIS IS ^[a]MY COVENANT WITH THEM, 
^(C)WHEN I TAKE AWAY THEIR SINS.”

 ^28 [b]From the standpoint of the gospel they are^(D)enemies for your sake, but ^[c]from the standpoint of God’s choice they are beloved for^(E)the sake of the fathers; ²⁹ for the gifts and the^(F)calling of God ^(G)are irrevocable. ³⁰ For just as you once were disobedient to God, but now have been shown mercy because of their disobedience,³¹ so these also now have been disobedient, that because of the mercy shown to you they also may now be shown mercy. ³² For ^(H)God has shut up all in disobedience so that He may show mercy to all.
