In his first inaugural speech in 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt, the newly elected president of the US, addressed a nation that was still reeling from the Great Depression. Hoping to ignite a more optimistic outlook regarding that economic crisis, he declared, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself!”		1933년 미국의 대통령으로 새로 선출된 프랭클린 루즈벨트는 아직 대공황으로 허덕이고 있는 국민들에게 첫 취임연설을 했습니다. 경제위기 상황에 대해 국민들이 좀 더 낙관적인 전망을 가지기를 바라면서, 루즈벨트 대통령은 “우리가 두려워해야 할 유일한 것은 두려움 그 자체입니다!”라고 선포하였습니다.
Fear often shows up in our lives when we are at risk of losing something—our wealth, health, reputation, position, safety, family, friends. It reveals our innate desire to protect the things in life that are important to us, rather than fully entrusting them to God’s care and control. When fear takes over, it cripples us emotionally and saps us spiritually. We’re afraid to tell others about Christ, to extend our lives and resources for the benefit of others, or to venture into new territory. A fearful spirit is more vulnerable to the enemy, who tempts us to compromise biblical convictions and to take matters into our own hands.		우리 삶에서 우리의 부나, 건강, 명성, 지위, 안전, 가족, 친구 등, 무언가를 잃을 위기에 처하게 될 때 우리는 종종 두려움을 경험하게 됩니다. 두려움이란 우리 삶에서 중요한 것들에 대해 하나님의 보살핌과 통치에 온전히 의존하기보다는 우리 스스로 그것들을 보호하고 싶어 하는 본능이 드러나는 것입니다. 두려움이 우리를 지배하면 그것은 우리의 감정을 마비시키고, 영적인 힘을 빼앗아 갑니다. 다른 이들에게 그리스도를 증거하는 것이나, 다른 사람들의 유익을 위해 우리의 삶과 가진 것들을 내어주는 것, 혹은 새로운 영역에 도전해보는 것 등을 두려워하게 됩니다. 두려워하는 영은 성경적 확신을 타협하게 하고 우리 자신의 의지로 일을 해결하라고 유혹하는 원수에게 더욱 취약합니다.
The remedy for fear, of course, is trust in our Creator. only when we trust the reality of God’s presence, power, protection, and provision for our lives can we share the joy of the psalmist, who said, “I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears” (Ps. 34:4). —Joe Stowell		두려움에 대한 대책은 물론, 우리의 창조주를 신뢰하는 것입니다. 우리가 하나님의 임재, 능력, 보호, 그리고 우리의 필요를 채워주시는 것을 사실로 믿을 때만이, “내가 여호와께 구하매 내게 응답하시고 내 모든 두려움에서 나를 건지셨도다”(시편 34:4)라고 한 시편기자의 기쁨을 함께 나눌 수 있습니다.

Trust in the Lord is the cure for a fearful spirit.		주님에 대한 신뢰가 두려워하는 영을 치료한다.

 

Psalm 34:1-10

Psalm 34

The LORD, a Provider and Deliverer.

    A Psalm of David when he ^[a]feigned madness before ^[b]Abimelech, who drove him away and he departed.

 ¹ I will ^(A)bless the LORD at all times; 
His ^(B)praise shall continually be in my mouth. 
² My soul will ^(C)make its boast in the LORD; 
The ^(D)humble will hear it and rejoice. 
³ O ^(E)magnify the LORD with me, 
And let us ^(F)exalt His name together.

 ⁴ I ^(G)sought the LORD, and He answered me, 
And ^(H)delivered me from all my fears. 
⁵ They ^(I)looked to Him and were radiant, 
And their faces will ^(J)never be ashamed. 
⁶ This ^[c]poor man cried, and ^(K)the LORD heard him 
And saved him out of all his troubles. 
⁷ The ^(L)angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, 
And rescues them.

 ⁸ O ^(M)taste and see that the LORD is good; 
How ^(N)blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
⁹ O fear the LORD, you ^(O)His saints; 
For to those who fear Him there is ^(P)no want. 
¹⁰ The young lions do lack and suffer hunger; 
But they who seek the LORD shall ^(Q)not be in want of any good thing.
