McCasland | | | The Mark Of Leadership | | [ Mark 10:35 - 10:45 ] - hymn218 | | | Whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. − Mark 10:44 | While visiting the campus of Purdue University on a frigid winter day, I came upon two young men chipping away thick ice on the sidewalk next to a fraternity house. Thinking they must be underclassmen who had been assigned the tough job by older fraternity brothers, I said, “They didn’t tell you about this when you joined, did they?” one looked up with a smile and said, “Well, we’re both upperclassmen. I’m the fraternity vice-president and my friend here is the president.” I thanked them for their hard work and went on my way having been reminded that serving others is the mark of a true leader.
When two of Jesus’ disciples asked Him for positions of honor in His coming kingdom, the Lord gathered His twelve closest followers and told them, “Whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all” (Mark 10:43-44). If there was any doubt about what Jesus meant, He reminded them that He had not come to be served but to serve others and to give His life to ransom them from the power of sin (v.45).
The mark of true, godly leadership is not power and privilege, but humble service. God gives us strength to follow Jesus’ example and to lead His way. |
Mark 10:35-45
[35] Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. "Teacher," they said, "we want you to do for us whatever we ask."
[36] "What do you want me to do for you?" he asked.
[37] They replied, "Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory."
[38] "You don't know what you are asking," Jesus said. "Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?"
[39] "We can," they answered. Jesus said to them, "You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with,
[40] but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared."
[41] When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John.
[42] Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.
[43] Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,
[44] and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.
[45] For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." |

| 몹시 추운 겨울날 퍼듀 대학교를 방문하던 중, 두 젊은이가 동아리회관 바로 옆에 있는 인도 위에서 두꺼운 얼음을 조금씩 걷어내고 있는 모습이 우연히 눈에 띄었습니다. 나는 그들이 동아리 선배들이 시켜서 힘든 일을 하게 된 하급생들이라 생각하여, “이런 일까지 해야 한다고 가입하기 전에 선배들이 미리 말해주지 않았죠?”라고 물어보았습니다. 그러자 한 학생이 고개를 들고 미소를 지으며, “실은 저희들은 상급생인데요. 저는 동아리 부회장이고, 옆에 있는 이 친구는 회장입니다.”라고 답했습니다. 나는 그들에게 수고해줘서 고맙다는 말을 하고, 남을 섬기는 것이 참다운 지도자의 특성이라는 것을 떠올리며 그 자리를 떠났습니다.
예수님의 두 제자가 예수님께 앞으로 임할 하나님의 나라에서 영광된 자리에 앉게 해줄 것을 요청했을 때, 예수님은 따르는 자들 중 가장 가까이 하셨던 열두 제자를 모으시고, “너희 중에 누구든지 크고자 하는 자는 너희를 섬기는 자가 되고 너희 중에 누구든지 으뜸이 되고자 하는 자는 모든 사람의 종이 되어야 하리라”(막 10:43-44)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님이 하신 말씀에 대해 의문이 있을까봐, 주님은 그들에게 주님이 온 것은 섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 도리어 섬기려 하고 자기 목숨을 많은 사람의 대속물로 주기 위함이라는 것을 상기시켜 주셨습니다(45절).
참되고 경건한 지도자의 특징은 권력이나 특권이 아니라 겸손한 섬김입니다. 하나님은 우리가 예수님을 본받아 하나님의 길로 잘 인도할 수 있도록 우리에게 힘을 주십니다. |
마가복음 10:35-45
[35] 세베대의 아들 야고보와 요한이 주께 나아와 여짜오되 선생님이여 무엇이든지 우리가 구하는 바를 우리에게 하여 주시기를 원하옵나이다
[36] 이르시되 너희에게 무엇을 하여 주기를 원하느냐
[37] 여짜오되 주의 영광중에서 우리를 하나는 주의 우편에, 하나는 좌편에 앉게 하여 주옵소서
[38] 예수께서 이르시되 너희는 너희가 구하는 것을 알지 못하는도다 내가 마시는 잔을 너희가 마실 수 있으며 내가 받는 침례를 너희가 받을 수 있느냐
[39] 그들이 말하되 할 수 있나이다 예수께서 이르시되 너희는 내가 마시는 잔을 마시며 내가 받는 침례를 받으려니와
[40] 내 좌우편에 앉는 것은 내가 줄 것이 아니라 누구를 위하여 준비되었든지 그들이 얻을 것이니라
[41] 열 제자가 듣고 야고보와 요한에 대하여 화를 내거늘
[42] 예수께서 불러다가 이르시되 이방인의 집권자들이 그들을 임의로 주관하고 그 고관들이 그들에게 권세를 부리는 줄을 너희가 알거니와
[43] 너희 중에는 그렇지 않을지니 너희 중에 누구든지 크고자 하는 자는 너희를 섬기는 자가 되고
[44] 너희 중에 누구든지 으뜸이 되고자 하는 자는 모든 사람의 종이 되어야 하리라
